Ostheimer book Hrókur and the Sky Riders – English

The English-language picture book Hrókur and the Sky Riders tells the story of the young Icelandic stallion Hrókur. Although he has never been to Iceland, a special dream awakens a deep longing for the land of his ancestors. Together with a curious squirrel, Hrókur sets off on an adventurous journey, during which they meet both old and new friends.

The atmospheric story is about courage, trust, friendship and the feeling of belonging somewhere. It also introduces children to Iceland’s rugged nature, the Northern Lights and the special characteristics of Icelandic horses. The warm, hand-drawn illustrations by Sophia Drescher bring Hrókur and his friends beautifully to life. The story was written by Ralf Wendland and Sibylle Engstrom.

Hrókur really exists: the young Icelandic stallion with the heart-shaped marking on his forehead was the inspiration for this book. The picture book pairs beautifully with the wooden Ostheimer Hrókur horse, the Ostheimer x Grapat Hrókur play set and the matching StoryLux silhouettes. This allows children to continue the story in their own open-ended play after reading.
